About Time & Temp

Instant weather, time, and location — no account, no tracking, no fuss.

How It Works

  1. You visit the site

Your browser prompts you to share your location. One tap and you're done.

  2. We detect your city

Your GPS coordinates are sent to a reverse-geocoding service to identify your city and state — nothing is stored on our end.

  3. Live weather is fetched

We pull current conditions — temperature, weather description, and local time — from the Open-Meteo weather API using your coordinates.

  4. Results appear instantly

Your city, temperature, condition, and a live ticking clock are displayed. That's it.

How Geolocation-Based Weather Actually Works

When you open Time & Temp, a lot happens in under a second. Here's the full technical picture — explained plainly.

The Browser Geolocation API

Modern browsers expose a built-in Geolocation API that lets websites request your physical coordinates — latitude and longitude — with your explicit permission. When you click 'Allow', the browser uses a combination of GPS (on mobile), Wi-Fi triangulation, and cell tower data to pinpoint your location. The accuracy varies: GPS on a clear day can be within a few meters, while Wi-Fi triangulation in a city is typically accurate to 20–50 meters. Either way, it's more than precise enough to identify your city and pull the right weather data.

Reverse Geocoding: Coordinates to City Name

Raw GPS coordinates like 40.7128° N, 74.0060° W aren't very readable. Reverse geocoding is the process of converting those numbers into a human-friendly place name — 'New York, NY'. Time & Temp uses the Nominatim geocoding service, which is powered by OpenStreetMap data. It's free, open-source, and doesn't require sending any personal information. The API receives only your coordinates and returns a structured address object. We extract the city and state, then discard everything else.

Why Your Location Might Show a Nearby Town

If you're in a suburb or rural area, the city name shown might be a nearby town rather than the exact neighborhood you're in. This is normal — reverse geocoding returns the most specific named place that contains your coordinates. In dense urban areas you'll usually see the major city name. In rural areas, you might see a county or township. The weather data itself is always accurate to your exact coordinates regardless of what city name is displayed.

What Happens When You Deny Location Access

If you decline the browser's location prompt, Time & Temp falls back to a manual city search. You type any city name, and we geocode it forward — converting the name to coordinates — then fetch weather for that location. This path never touches your device's GPS at all. It's a completely valid way to use the tool, and many users prefer it for privacy reasons or when using a desktop computer where GPS accuracy is lower.

How Accurate Is the Weather Data?

Open-Meteo is a professional-grade weather API used by developers and researchers worldwide. Here's what you can expect from the data it provides.

Current Temperature

Typically within ±1–2°F of official readings

Open-Meteo blends data from multiple national weather services — including NOAA (USA), ECMWF (Europe), and DWD (Germany) — using a technique called numerical weather prediction (NWP). Current temperature readings are interpolated from the nearest grid point, which is usually within a few miles of your location. In most conditions, you can expect readings within 1–2°F of what a nearby official weather station would report.

Hourly Forecast

Reliable for the next 24–48 hours

Short-range hourly forecasts from Open-Meteo are highly reliable for the next 24 hours and reasonably accurate out to 48 hours. Beyond that, atmospheric variability increases and forecasts should be treated as general guidance rather than precise predictions. The hourly strip on Time & Temp shows the next 12 hours — the window where forecast accuracy is highest.

7-Day Forecast

Useful for planning; less precise beyond day 4

The 7-day forecast is useful for planning purposes — knowing whether the weekend looks rainy or sunny — but daily high/low temperatures become less precise beyond day 4. This is a fundamental limitation of atmospheric modeling, not specific to Open-Meteo. All weather services face the same constraint. Use the extended forecast for general trend awareness rather than exact temperature expectations.

Weather Conditions (Sunny, Rainy, etc.)

Based on WMO weather interpretation codes

Condition labels like 'Clear Sky', 'Partly Cloudy', or 'Thunderstorm' are derived from WMO (World Meteorological Organization) weather interpretation codes. These are standardized codes used globally by meteorological agencies. Time & Temp maps each code to a plain-English label and an emoji for quick visual scanning. The mapping is conservative — we prefer clear, accurate labels over dramatic ones.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Time & Temp

1

Use it as your morning routine check

Open Time & Temp first thing in the morning for an instant read on temperature and conditions before you get dressed. The feels-like temperature is especially useful — it accounts for wind chill and humidity, so it tells you how the air will actually feel on your skin, not just what the thermometer says.

2

Check the hourly strip before heading out

The hourly forecast strip shows the next 12 hours with temperature and condition at a glance. If you're planning to be outside in the afternoon, scroll through the strip to see if conditions are expected to change. A sunny morning can turn into afternoon thunderstorms in many parts of the country — the hourly view catches that.

3

Search any city for travel planning

You don't have to use your current location. Type any city name into the search box to check weather anywhere in the world. This is handy for checking conditions at your destination before a trip, or keeping an eye on weather for family in another city.

4

Use the QR code tool to share your location's weather

Generate a QR code for your city's weather page and share it with friends or post it somewhere physical. Anyone who scans it will land on Time & Temp and can check weather for their own location instantly.

5

Bookmark it for offline-free access

Time & Temp is a lightweight, fast-loading web app with no login required. Bookmark it on your phone's home screen for one-tap access. Since it uses your device's GPS, it works anywhere you have a data connection — no setup, no account, no app store download needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the site ask for my location?▾

Location access is how Time & Temp knows which city's weather to show you. Without it, we'd have no way to automatically display your local conditions. You can always deny the request and type a city name manually instead — the site works either way.

Is my location data stored or shared?▾

No. Your GPS coordinates are used only in the moment to fetch weather data and identify your city. They are never written to a database, logged in any file, or shared with any third party. The moment your weather loads, the coordinates are gone.

Why is the temperature different from my phone's weather app?▾

Small differences between weather apps are normal and expected. Different apps use different data sources, update at different intervals, and may round temperatures differently. A 1–3°F difference is typical and not a sign of an error. If you see a large discrepancy (more than 5°F), it may be because your phone's app is using a different location or a cached reading.

How often does the weather data update?▾

Weather data is fetched fresh every time you load or refresh the page. There is no background polling or automatic refresh — each page load triggers a new API call to Open-Meteo, which updates its data from weather stations roughly every hour.

Does Time & Temp work outside the United States?▾

Yes. Open-Meteo provides global weather coverage, and the Nominatim geocoding service covers the entire world. You can use Time & Temp from any country and search for cities anywhere on the planet.

Why does it show a nearby town instead of my exact neighborhood?▾

Reverse geocoding returns the most specific named administrative area that contains your coordinates. In dense cities you'll see the city name. In suburbs or rural areas, you might see a township, borough, or county name. The weather data is always accurate to your exact GPS coordinates regardless of the place name shown.

Can I use Time & Temp on my phone?▾

Absolutely. The site is fully responsive and works on any screen size. On mobile, GPS accuracy is typically higher than on desktop, so your location detection will be faster and more precise. You can add it to your home screen from your browser's share menu for one-tap access.

What does 'feels like' temperature mean?▾

The 'feels like' (or apparent) temperature accounts for wind chill in cold weather and heat index in hot, humid weather. It represents how the air temperature actually feels on exposed skin, which can differ significantly from the measured air temperature. On a cold, windy day, the feels-like temperature can be 10–15°F lower than the actual temperature.
